lyrics
Mum, dad and respectable colleagues,
I’m coming out today;
There’s something that I’ve been coming to terms with,
Something that’s hard to say
I’ve been denying, inadvertently lying,
Though earnestly trying to know how to be -
Like a fish out of water, a card out of order,
And everyone else can see...
I think that I might be a folksinger,
I think I’m a rambling soul,
'Cause when I’m standing beside a highway I feel perfect,
Like clouds on a roll.
And all this talk about resumes and remuneration
Has been taking the wind out of my sails.
I want to wake up and come alive each morning,
So I’m heading off the rails.
Well I have heard all of the recommendations,
And internalised each of the rules:
If you want to give, and help us all to live,
Learn how to at one of the schools.
But they only teach of the rationable things,
They say nothing of love or of shame;
That’s in the stories, it’s in the stories -
Stories are the rain.
So Grandma and uncles and aunties all,
I've got to get this off of my chest,
But you know, all the signs have been there from the start,
And you could have probably guessed
That one day these routines and this regimentation
Would be trying to take wind from my sails.
Well I’m waking up, and I’m coming alive;
I’m heading off the rails.
Yeh I’m coming out, I’m a folksinger,
And I will be loyal to song:
To have and to hold, God-willing til I’m old -
If it feels this right then don’t say that it’s wrong
'Cause all this talk about resumes and remuneration
Has been taking the wind out of my sails.
I want to wake up and come alive each morning;
I’m heading off the rails.
